A Lector's Sacred Calling: Bringing God's Word to our Ears

As we gather each week to worship, there are many visible and invisible ways in which members of our congregation serve the Lord and one another. One such role that has deep roots in the Christian tradition is that of the lector—the person entrusted with the reading of Holy Scripture during our worship services.
But what is a lector, and why is this ministry so important?
A Brief History of the Lector in Worship
The word lector comes from the Latin legere, meaning “to read.” In the earliest centuries of the Christian church, the public reading of Scripture was a vital ministry, especially since many believers could not read for themselves. Ancient church records show that “readers” were often set apart for this sacred duty, forming one of the earliest recognized roles in Christian worship. Their task was more than simply reading words aloud; they were the voice through which the living Word of God came to the gathered community.
Over the centuries, although the role of lector changed and sometimes became less visible, it has always remained a key way in which lay people participate in the ministry of the church. When the Scriptures are read aloud in worship, it is not merely information being shared; it is God’s living voice being proclaimed to God’s people.
The Importance of the Lector Today
In our own congregation, those who serve as lectors continue this ancient and vital ministry. By proclaiming God’s Word, the lector invites us to listen, reflect, and be shaped by the story of God’s love for the world. This is no small task! It requires preparation, prayer, and a willing heart. The presence of the lector reminds us that God’s Word is for everyone, not just for pastors or those with theological training. When we listen together, we are united as one body, called to live out what we have heard.
A New Practice: Blessing the Lector
To honor and uplift this important ministry, we will begin a new practice in our worship services: a blessing for the lector before the reading of the lessons. This short moment of prayer will ask the Holy Spirit to guide the lector’s heart, mind, and voice, and to prepare all of us to receive God’s Word with open ears and hearts. By highlighting the ministry of the lector in this way, we remember that every act of service in worship—no matter how big or small—is holy and significant in God’s eyes.
An Invitation
